My Mothers Day Tribute to My Grandmother
I would like to take the time to honor someone who made the woman I am today. That someone is my grandmother. She was born before the great depression in 1917. I was reminiscing with my brother this week about all the things she did which have stuck in our minds to this day.
My grandmother was a fisher woman, there wasn’t a fishing opportunity she didn’t try to get in on. My brother admitted to me that it broke her heart when the doctor told her that she could no longer take the trek up to Minnesota. He said she really cried about it. It was that much of an integral part of who she was. We both ended up being alike in the respect that we bait our own hooks, take our own fish off the hook and string them up by ourselves. I remember the fish fry dinners at our friends house up there. We would spend the time cleaning crappie, frying it up and enjoying our catch. I would help my grandmother make all sorts of side dishes-potato salad, deviled eggs, baked beans, corn on the cob.
I also used to bake right along side her at home. She would give me the left over pie dough and I would take my little Easy Bake tin pans and make cinnamon sugar pastry treats. When she baked cakes I did the same thing she gave me enough cake batter to make mini cakes and gave me some frosting to frost them.
After my “mom” officially ditched us at the age of 7 my grandmother was determined to make sure I knew how to do everything I would need to know in taking care of a household. I learned cooking, cleaning, ironing, laundry, planting, harvesting, I even learned how to make curtains by hand.
My grandmother taught me respect, determination, faith, and the importance of family.
She was a remarkable woman even in light of the fact that she was trapped more or less in a 50 year plus marriage from hell. She told me that I was a pretty girl who was smart and could do anything I set my mind to. I think that is where I got my determination from-hearing her tell me that over and over again.
Aging was one thing she did gracefully she didn’t really start to show her age until she was 80 yrs old. Even then she was the most beautiful woman I have ever gotten the pleasure of getting to know. She took pride in her appearance. When our hair dresser team split up and the one moved to Centralia Ks she made the trip to get her hair done. She used Oil of Olay on her face every day. I inherited her ability to age gracefully. Of course I got proactive to help that too. I eat right, don’t smoke, drink sparingly, and when something feels wrong physically I get it taken care of quick.
She passed away the same year that the Twin Towers fell and to add to the irony my grandfather passed away the same week eight years later. He also passed in the same nursing home that his father passed away in. 9/11 hits me a little harder than most just because of that fact. With that being said I am not saying that those who lost loved ones during that time suffered any less than I did I am just saying that both events make it a hard time of the year for me.
I hope you take the time to honor the woman who was the “Mother” in your life. Additionally if you do not have a “Mother” figure direct in your life why not find a woman who is your elder and from a bond of friendship with them.
I could go on and on about all the influences my grandmother had on me, things she did, things we did together. That would take a whole book. So I leave you with these wonderful insights.
