Random Acts of Topeka and a THANK YOU!!!
Wednesday I was having a particularly crappy day. Family I never thought would do me wrong the way they did put a hot molten blade into my soul. I had thought that greed seemed to be the order of the day. I was so heart sick that I wanted to just cry and cry some more until I couldn’t cry any longer. Then, something happened just a few hours later that made my suddenly crappy day seem a little better.
My son and I had gone to Taco Bell to get something to eat because well I didn’t feel like cooking after running around and getting errands ran for the last few days. We had just sat down to eat and this man in a ball cap white t shirt and tan shorts handed these kids something that was rolled up in a piece of paper. I overheard him telling the family that he does this every week to one random person and usually it is a kid since he works with kids. I then heard him say that the deal is the kid he handed this gift to had to keep half and give the other half away.
After the man left the kid he handed the gift to opened it up and I saw him take out two $5 bills and one $10 bill. The mom had a look of shock on her face. I asked at that point if she knew the guy and she said she didn’t.
In light of the fact that we are trying to rebuild Topeka’s image I thought this would be a great random acts of giving story to share with my readers here. So I approached her and told her that her outing was about to get a little more bizarre. I asked her if I could post a little blurb about what I had just witnessed on my blog. She agreed. I asked them what there names were, where they lived and how old they were. Cory is a 15 yr old boy, Katherine his sister is 7 and his moms name is Theresa, they are all Topeka residents. This happened out at the Wanamaker Taco Bell.
This isn’t the first random act of giving I have witnessed in the last two weeks or so either. On Twitter a pastor from @aoknaz , @mattgwin helped out a pregnant mom who hadn’t eaten in three days because she was giving all her food to her three kids. There was an out pouring of help from folks in the community and on Twitter.
The fact of the matter is that Topeka is still a caring community, when my apartment caught fire four years ago my case worker at SRS helped me find resources to regain what I lost. My ex boyfriend opened his old house for me and my son so we could have at least a place to sleep, eat and shower until the apartment complex could get us into another apartment. I could go on and on about times in my life when the chips were down that I got the help I needed at the time. No not lucky just feel that I have angels watching over me in heaven.
There are caring compassionate people here who do try hard to do the right thing. We are not all bad folks. I believe still that no matter what if you do try to do the right thing someone somewhere sometime will help you when you need it. I am not perfect, I do have my own ideas on how things should work. However, as anyone who has gotten to know me even on a limited basis knows that when it comes time for me to help out in the community I do so without hesitation when and where I can. I don’t do it for glory I do it because it is just part of who I am intrinsically as a person.
THANK YOU Topeka residents who prove that this is a caring, compassionate, giving community to be part of.
