Yes there is one. We as creatives often get our time and talents taken for granted and many think that we should work for free. That is wrong.
I would like to take a moment to share with you my process in writing just one blog post. I will use the post I did on Think Big Topeka Events I Took Part In for my example on this.
First, a blogger has to get to the event, scout the place out, get a feel for the audience and the tone of the event. Then they can proceed on getting either video coverage or photo coverage or both. Sometimes I am lucky to be able to do both. For the Flash Mob that took place that evening it was easy to get the footage that I needed and most of the folks I got pics of were more than accommodating. A blogger also has to listen and be observant so that they can present the facts as accurately as possible later when they sit down to write up the post. That is all really the easiest parts to the process.
Later at home or the office wherever the blogger sits down to write is when the hard work takes place. It can take anywhere from just a few min to several minutes to write a draft post. You then have to go back through and look for a site or profile on the people or organizations that you are presenting in your post. That can often take a huge chunk of time upwards to an hour or two if you really have to dig to find anything about them online. You also have to find images if you choose to go with the post and re-size if necessary. Often times you need to take the image to your photo editor and clean it up a bit so it looks presentable on the page. Depending on the amount of correction you need to make to the image it can take minimal time or it can take a significant amount of time.
When you have done all that it is time to bring it all together and write as well as format a final draft for publishing. If you have done all the things mentioned above then it should only take you moments to do this. Then once your done and you have everything in order you can then publish the post to the internet.
No your not done yet. Just because you have written a post doesn’t mean people will flock to your site in droves instantaneously. Now you have to get out there and let people know that you have written it. Marketing yourself can take just as long or longer depending on the level you want to take it to.
I was chatting with Brendan Jensen awhile back and I told him that it can take about two days worth of time to write and promote just one article. One day to write and one day to promote.
So that brings me to this point as a solopreneur or independent blogger such as myself you have to wear all the hats in business and just not pigeonhole on one aspect. You still need to look at the core fundamentals of business and operate accordingly.Your time and talents are valuable. So why should you let folks take you for granted.
