Wildheart Social Media in 2011- The Year in Review

A couple of days ago I finally had the time to sit down and really think about what worked for me and my company in the social media scene last year. I also looked at what didn’t work because this is just as important to my business as I want to know if maybe what didn’t work could be improved upon or if I have to shelve whatever it was and move onto to something else.

That is really what makes us grow as business owners is seeing what worked for us, what didn’t work or at least didn’t work so well and then seeing if we can make a change to make what we struggled with easier to do in the next business cycle. Wednesday I spent the day with my son and his class at a math, science and technology field trip center called Starbase. One of the first things we did was an experiment called Lt. Eggbert. In this experiment we had to go through an entire simulated product creation cycle to make sure Lt. Eggbert had the best product to keep him from crashing on the moon. Now I know you’re probably looking at your screen and scratching your head thinking what in the heck is she talking about and why did she suddenly do a 180 in her thought process. In business we are challenged like this every day. We are constantly bombarded with problems that need to be assessed and solved.

This is also what makes myself and others in my circles the entrepreneurs that we are, we need to be challenged on a daily basis with new ideas to test hypothesis and solve problems and re test if we didn’t get the desired result we were looking for.

So in 2011 this is what worked for my company.

  1. Attending Twitter conferences- #140confDM and #140confSmallTown
  2. Word Camp Kc
  3. Blogging
  4. Finding marketing initiatives on Facebook
  5. Speaking out on human interest topics
  6. Twitter Chats
  7. Entrepreneurial building activities
  8. Providing stand by assist for Jarod McAferty in his Social Media workshops at the library
  9. I was also asked by a political activist to write a white paper on the #heblowsalot firestorm that broke on Twitter over Thanksgiving.

What I still struggled with:

  • still struggling being taken seriously locally- not sure if that is true perception or implied at this point, but there is fierce turf war here in the social media scene
  • Podcamp is still iffy- as a StartUp I am not able to contribute the big bucks just yet to get taken seriously as a major media sponsor
  • Big Dream Gathering didn’t yield the results I was remotely hoping to get.

So what did I learn from all this. I am going to have to take the champions I do have locally and make the best of things here, while continuing to do what I do best and go out globally and make my mark.

Wow, it sounds like you did some exciting (and successful) things last year! That is awesome! I cannot wait to get that big and do such great things!

LeilaKB oh pooh you don't need to be big to do all of this stuff you just need to look for opportunities to get your name out there. Find things that match your niche that look interesting and find out how to get involved.

There are few things that I haven't started with my company. The things that you have enumerated about gives me an idea of what to try this year. Finding marketing initiatives on Facebook is one great thing that I haven't thought of.
