Wildheart’s Web 2.0 on Going Green

Today is Earth day as many of you around the country and the globe know. I have been thinking this week as to what I am doing to reduce my carbon foot print just not for Earth Week but everyday.

I switched the living room lighting to CFL light bulbs about the first of March this year. I also switched the upstairs bath as well. It is too soon to tell the savings just yet on that switch but it has been about two months now and I have not had to buy any more replacement bulbs for the living room. The light given off from CFL takes some getting used to as it is not as warm of a light which is normally given off by regular filament light bulbs. On that score because the CFL lights don’t give off as much heat during some of the warmer times of this spring my living room stayed a lot cooler so I didn’t have to turn on my air conditioner.

I also shut my computer down every night before I go to bed. Actually I never really thought of it as saving energy as I was doing it to keep my cats from screwing something up if they stepped on my keyboard. In retrospect it is a good practice to get into as it does save a lot of electricity. My electric bill never runs higher than $80 a month just from doing that one thing consistently.

I also have solar walk way lights and a CFL front porch light. I put that one in about the first August I was here and have not had to replace it yet. I have been here going on three years in Dec of 2010.

Granted there are several more things I could be doing however, these are small steps in the right direction. After they are done remodeling my house this year and I can close my patio in I am going to look into building a reusable rain water system so that I can use rain water to water my garden that I will be planting.

Have a great Earth Day and Earth Month. I would like to now turn it over to you what are some of the ways you go green everyday of the year???

It never occurs to me to let my computer run when i'm not there. At least I put it to sleeping mode. I usually even turn it off when I go for lunch.

I know a lot ppl let it run because they want to be reachable but what's the use if the person does not respond? It's frustrating for the person waiting for a response.

Good for you to turn off your computer and I'm sure you gonna find more and more ways to save here and there a little bit.

I have replaced my bulps in the office, have had one in the living room for years but I don't want one of those on my bed table, it's too close to my head.

I live in a rented place and hope they replace the fridge and oven when I move out. As long as i live there and they are working no way they replace it. I pay for it so why would they care?

I'm gonna turn off my printer from now on when it's not needed. Thanks for your post!

My Printer only comes on when I order a print job and it shuts down when my PC shuts down. They are doing a massive remodel of my unit this summer so the new appliances a/c and furnace should also make an additional improvement on the energy efficiency of my house. Thanks for stopping by :)
